Secure Shell, commonly known as SSH, is a cryptographic network protocol used to execute commands on a remote hosting server or to exchange data between a hosting server and a client. Due to the fact that the information exchanged by the 2 sides is protected, a 3rd party simply cannot intercept it, which makes SSH a favored means of handling an Internet hosting account. The commands that can be executed depend on the type of hosting service. On a shared web server, for instance, the alternatives are limited as you'll not have root access to the server, so you may only create/move/delete files, create and unpack archives, export and import databases, etcetera. These are all actions that are executed within the shared hosting account and don't require a higher level of access. With a virtual or a dedicated server, you will have the ability to install server-side software or to restart the server or just a certain service (web server, database server, etc.). SSH commands are submitted with a command line, and if you do not use a UNIX-like OS, there are a variety of applications for other OSs, which you can use to connect to the remote server as well.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Servers

SSH access is included as standard with some of our semi-dedicated server solutions, while with others you can easily add it via the hosting Control Panel if required - even just for the current month. Either way, you can activate and de-activate the function with a single mouse click through the SSH section of the CP. In the same place, you'll discover the server name, the port number and the username needed to connect to our platform. You'll also find a box in which you can easily type in the password that you would like to use, as it doesn't have to be the same as the one you use to log into the CP. For better security, you could also change it as much as you want. A full list of the commands which can be executed within a semi-dedicated account is provided in our Knowledge Base, together with the syntax and a couple of examples. An extra function after SSH access is enabled shall be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP through any FTP client that supports this type of connections.

SSH Telnet in VPS Servers

When you obtain a new VPS server from us, it will come with full root access and you will be able to connect to the server and to control everything using an SSH console. The feature comes as standard with all packages, so you will not need to activate or upgrade anything. Your hosting server shall be set up soon after you get it and the moment you receive the Welcome e-mail with the login details, you could connect through the server’s main IP address and start working. Given that the VPS is a software emulation of a dedicated server and is separated from the other accounts within the physical machine, there'll be no restrictions in terms of the commands which you can use. You'll have full root access, so that you could install and run any application that can work on a Linux server, manage files, folders and databases or start/stop/reboot the whole machine or any software running on it.
